Planning has started on the refurbishment of the Happy Valley entrance to the Llandudno Pier in Wales.

The project will involve replacement of three 16m girders, side fencing and the entire wooden decking from the entrance through to the ice cream kiosk.

The owner, Adam Williams and his Tir Prince Leisure Group, are shouldering the huge investment involved in the work on the pier, which dates back to 1876.

Llandudno Pier is 2,295ft long but has a chequered history as its ornate Pier Pavilion was burned down in 1994.
