Holiday camp operator Butlin’s has started a major legal battle with its insurers over whether the flooding of its Minehead, Somerset, UK, camp in September last year was caused by a storm or a flood.

The insurers, including Aviva, insist that the deluge was caused by a storm and under the small print in its policy the payout limit is £25m. Butlin’s, however, claims that it was a flood and wants £60m.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday reported that it had seen documents from Butlin’s insisting that a "named storm" had not been declared and there were no high winds.

The legal action continues and as yet Aviva and the other insurers have not responded to the Butlin’s paperwork.
