British amusement trade association BACTA is repeating a fun idea to get seaside Members of Parliament to connect with the industry.

Sir Roger Gayle won the last competition

It is repeating its SeasideSelfie competition, in which MPs take photographs of themselves in a local seaside environment, with the winner receiving a prize to donate to a deserving family in his or her constituency.

The association is calling on MPs from all parties to show support for the British seaside with the competition, now into its third year. As the MPs go off for their summer recess from the business of running the country, they are reminded of the contribution of the seaside to tourism.

Prior to the pandemic, the arcade economy contributed £845m in turnover per year to the wider UK economy, according to independent research carried out by Cebr. The arcades at the seaside also employed 20,000 people.

The ‘selfies’ taken by MPs at their favourite seaside location will be shared on social media with the #SeasideSelfie tag.
