Fire has severely damaged the attractions on the 100-year-old Blackpool Central Pier.
The UK seaside resort town has three piers, all owned by the same company. They all include extensive amusements and attractions.
The fire on the Central Pier broke out on Friday night, only a week after the pier had been reopened after the Covid-19 lockdown. It destroyed a carnival ride and damaged an engineering workshop. But the basic structure of the pier, mainly wood, is apparently undamaged although checks have to be made.
Fifty firemen fought the blaze in the early hours of the morning with 10 fire engines. The fire chief commented: “Fortunately we had some of the conditions in our favour, no strong wind and the tide was out."
