Over a year ago this column reported a rumour in UK government circles that following the Olympics the Department of Culture, Media and Sport may lose its responsibility for gambling.

That may now be proved to be a correct forecast – except the reality could be even wider. According to current speculation, the present Minister, Maria Miller, is being criticised for under-performing and her entire department may be closed to cut costs.

The principal problem has lain with the department’s failings in its media responsibilities and Miller’s top official, Jonathan Stephens, has just resigned, which has prompted still more speculation.

According to national newspapers there is now a strong case for dismantling the DCMS to save costs this autumn.
