The commemoration was new for 2022, intended to celebrate cinema, thank moviegoers for their custom and invigorate interest in cinema-going following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that the top three selling movies in the US of the four-day Labour Day holiday weekend were:

1. Bullet Train ($7.3m)

2. Top Gun: Maverick ($7m)

3. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($6.6m)

National Cinema Day was also celebrated in the United Kingdom, where tickets were £3. Comscore reported that the promotion brought in 1.46 million visitors to UK cinemas.
