The cost of a day out at Blackpool Pleasure Beach has been cited as a primary reason for the resort no longer topping the table as the best staycation destination in England.

Top is the Lake District, followed by Dorset, with Blackpool third in the table compiled after research named The Staycation Index, from finance specialists RIFT.

The organisation ranked eight of the country’s best destinations for a family of four according to a variety of criteria, including accommodation costs, day out to a nearby attraction, the cost of a pint of beer and a meal of fish and chips.

The accommodation was assessed on a short-term stay at rented accommodation such as AirBnB. It showed that the cost had risen from £146 to £194 this year, a rise of 33 per cent.

The day out for four was pinpointed at £68, up 80 per cent, and a pint is up three per cent, working out at £4.41. The fish and chips averaged £11.69, up four per cent.

Last year the Lake District and Blackpool topped the Index, but this year Blackpool is down to third, after the Lake District and Dorset.

RIFT said that this was mostly because the cost of a visit to Blackpool Pleasure Beach had risen to £180 for the family. The cost of a day at The World of Beatrix Potter in the Lake District, on the other hand, was down 35 per cent.
