Planning permission has been granted for the first phase of the restoration work on Birnbeck Pier, that connects the UK mainland near Weston-super-Mare with Birnbeck Island.

Work will begin this year on the long-abandoned structure and longer term the restoration of the buildings on Birnbeck Island.
The pier is Grade II listed and is owned by North Somerset Council. The first phase covers the restoration of the Pier Master’s Cottage and the bell tower with extensions and the establishment of a café, other visitor facilities and toilets.
A grant of nearly £5m from the government is being used for the work.
