Motivation

I’M often asked how to motivate team members. My standard reply is, “hire motivated people.”

In an effort not to sound flip, let me lay out what those who really know about motivation reveal. Dan Pink, author of When, Drive and To Sell is Human, refers to internal (or intrinsic) and external (or extrinsic) motivations. He makes the point that in the absence of the external things, like reward, recognition or fear, the motivation to perform my not hold. When we can tap into the internal motivation (intrinsic) things that drive others, then we have a way to help team members motivate themselves.
