The US gambling industry was worth nearly $90bn last year, new figures show.
Research and Markets’ Casinos, Gaming and Wagering 2011 study reveals that Americans wagered approximately $90bn at casinos and racetracks, playing lottery games and on other forms of legal betting in 2010.
Around 70 per cent of the adult population placed some form of wager during the year.
In total, gross gaming revenue from these forms of gambling stood at $88.6bn in 2010.
The latest State of the States report from the American Gaming Association showed that consumer spending on commercial casinos increased 0.9 per cent in 2010, with the sector contributing $7.59bn in direct gaming taxes.
