If the opposition Labour party wins the elections in the Australian state of Tasmania next year, it will ban slot machines from pubs and clubs, the party – currently in opposition – has stated.

It has pledged to remove poker machines, as they are called, from non-casino venues by 2023. That would take 2,375 machines out of the street market. The election is in March, 2018.

Labour party leader Rebecca White said that the games provided widespread harm. Last year, said White, Tasmanians lost A$110m (€71.3m) on poker machines in pubs and clubs. The party would provide an A$55m package to help venues and businesses make the transition.
