The CEO of Norway’s state-owned gambling company Norsk Tipping has resigned after customers were wrongly told they had won life-changing amounts of money.

“I am terribly sorry that we have disappointed so many, and I understand that people are angry with us,” said Tonje Sagstuen, who added that the company has received messages from customers who had made holiday and home renovation plans.

“To them I can only say sorry. But I understand that it is a small consolation.”

Local media, cited by BBC News, said an error in the conversion from Eurocents to Norwegian kroner saw the prize amounts from Friday’s Eurojackpot draw multiplied by 100 instead of being divided by 100.

The incorrect prize amounts were removed from Norsk Tipping’s website and app on Friday evening, with the correct winnings uploaded on Saturday night.

Norsk Tipping admitted it has faced a number of “technical problems” in the past year.

“Yesterday's error with the prize amount is not a technical error, but the company will still investigate how this could have happened, to prevent something similar from happening again,” it added.
