Macau junket operator SunCity’s investment in the $4bn Hoi An South casino project in Vietnam may be just the start of the company’s expansion into becoming a casino operator.
Executive director Andrew Lo said the Hong Kong-listed company will be looking for other casino opportunities, including pursuing a Japanese licence.
The move should not be seen as an attempt to leave Macau, where it runs about half of the market’s junket business, Lo said, but as a way to make money directly from casino operations as well.
SunCity is entering Hoi An through the purchase of Star Admiral Group. Other investors in Hoi An are Hong Kong developer Chow Tai Fook and Vietnamese firm Vina Capital Investment.
