Secretary of State John Gale has announced that a proposed constitutional amendment to legalise casino gambling in the US state of Nebraska will not go before voters.
The amendment came up well short of the number of valid signatures needed to make the ballot, he said. County election officials were able to verify 77,956 signatures, while rejecting 41,710.
Now they will finish verifying signatures for two related measures. They propose state laws to regulate expanded gambling and to spell out how tax revenues would be divided. But without constitutional authorisation, the laws could not be implemented.
