The revision of the new draft regulations to update Austria's gaming laws may see three more casino licences for the country.

Until now the business has been entirely in the hands of the Casinos Austria monopoly. An updating of the gambling laws is taking place and the draft regulations were due to be revised in the Austrian legislature this week.

The latest view from within the industry is that the three casino licences will include one for a poker casino. Most industry observers in Austria expect Novomatic – which has until now been prevented from operating within its own country because of the monopoly – will campaign for at least one of the licences. The net effect of the new licences will be that the Austrian casino industry will be better able to compete with casinos in surrounding countries.
