MGM Resorts is asking gaming regulators for permission to move the opening of its Springfield casino in the US state of Massachussets back about a year until September 2018

The company is saying that road construction will delay its own construction schedule. MGM will make an additional $4m in payments to Springfield by 2017 in return for the later opening.

The delay would give one more year of relief from new competition to Penn National’s Plainridge Park, 60 miles to the east, and casinos in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
