Lawrence Ho-led Melco International may be looking to expand its gaming operations to Spain.

The Hong Kong-listed casino operator has a memorandum of understanding with Veremonte Espana for the possible management of at least one yet-to-be-developed casino that would be part of the BCN Dream resort near Barcelona.

In addition to a casino, plans for BCN Dream include 10,000 hotel rooms, an exhibition and meeting centre and residential housing. Melco International is one-third owner of Melco Crown.

Last year, Las Vegas Sands dropped plans to build a mega resort in Madrid, saying it could not justify its multi-billion dollar resort complex with current taxes and regulations, including Spain’s smoking ban.
