Macau’s gaming sector raked in a total of MOP19.8bn (US$2.5bn) in December, an eight per cent year-on-year increase, according to data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
The full year finished with MOP223bn, down 3.3 per cent compared to 2015, which was in line with analyst expectations. Looking ahead, analysts said they expect January to be a big growth month due to Chinese New Year and a public holiday on January 2.
“Even though the January calendar is unfavourable with one fewer Friday and one fewer Saturday, we expect the growth rate could be the highest yet during the recovery period,” said Union Gaming.
