Baron Steinberg of Belfast died suddenly on Monday, aged 73. Leonard Steinberg was the founder and non-executive chairman of Stanley Leisure, the bookmaking and casino group.

Steinberg founded the company in 1958 and moved it to Liverpool in 1977 after refusing to pay protection money to paramilitaries in Northern Ireland, which resulted in him being shot in 1977 by the Provisional IRA. William Hill bought Stanley Leisure’s bookmaking operations in 2005 and the Malaysian Genting Group then bought his casino operation, although Steinberg retained 11.3 per cent of the shares.

He was made a Conservative life peer in 2004. Leonard Steinberg died while travelling to attend a sitting of the House of Lords on Monday. He leaves a wife, Beryl and two children and his brother Gerald is a well-known coin machine operator.
