The US state of Texas could have up to seven racinos, four destination casinos in major cities and another four destination casinos on islands in the Gulf of Mexico.

Proposed legislation states that the destination casinos must be in counties with a population of more than 1.5 million, which include the cities of Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

These casinos would each require a $1bn investment while the four island casinos will each require a $250m investment. The legislation would also allow tribal casinos.

Slots would be taxed at 35 per cent and tables at 20 per cent. The bill would require a statewide November referendum approval as well as county referendum approvals.
