Argentina is arguably the most successful country in South America, due in no small way to its tourism and entertainment industries, including gambling.
The country gained its independence from Spain in the early 19th century. Although gambling is popular in Argentina, it has a chequered history. Horse racing was the first recorded form of gambling with the opening in 1876 of its first racetrack, the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo in Buenos Aires.
