A bill legalising casinos in Japan may not get to the legislature this session, after all.

Some legislators who are part of Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s coalition may not back the bill in the current session, including leader of the New Komeito party. Natsuo Yamaguchi.

Yamaguchi said that a consensus may not be reached this session and that the public lacks a full understanding of the casino issue. It has been widely speculated that a bill would be introduced this year, but now may be pushed back into 2014.

The possibility of casinos in Japan has attracted the interest of major casino companies including MGM Resorts, Wynn, Las Vegas Sands, Caesars, Galaxy Entertainment, SJM and Melco Crown, as well as various Japanese companies.

Estimates on how much gaming revenue Japan could generate vary from $10bn to $20bn a year.
