The United States Government Accountability Office has released a study concerning the regulation of the $2bn Indian gaming industry.

The GAO has recommended these changes to the National Indian Gaming Commission: get input from states on plans to issue guidance on Class III minimum internal control standards; review of and review performance measures to better assess its training and technical assistance efforts for tribes; and develop documented procedures and guidance for the use of letters it sends to tribes related to issues of concern.

The Commission generally agreed with all of the recommendations, according to the study. In addition to the recommendations, the accountability office found that the 24 states with Class III gaming vary in their approach for regulation from taking on a very active role, to a moderate role, to a limited one.
