Industrial action at Crown Melbourne planned for October 15 was averted at the 11th hour thanks to a new pay deal signed between the Australian operator and the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union.

The agreement delivered pay rises of four per cent a year and defers changes to the career structure of experienced croupiers. Crown’s staff will now become the best paid casino workers in Australia.

"This is a fantastic outcome for casino union members and their determined campaign to win respect from Crown in making it Australia’s most profitable casino," said Jess Walsh, Victorian secretary of LHMU.

"Members have won pay increases that mean they will be among the best paid hospitality workers in Australia. This landmark agreement will ensure there are good jobs at Crown.

"Members’ courage to stand up and demand respect has been absolutely vital to achieving this outcome. This agreement also confirms their right to be union members at Crown will be respected."

Earlier in October, Crown announced that the role of chief executive officer at the casino would be combined with the role of chief executive officer of Crown. The new role is to be undertaken by current CEO, Rowen Craigie.
