Brazil could be a big slot machine market if it legalises gaming, Todd Eilers of Eilers Research estimates.
His base case scenario estimates that Brazil will ultimately get 25 casinos with an average of 1,000 slots each, making the country a 25,000 Class III slot market. Most of the machines would be sold rather than leased as operators there are likely to have access to cash, he said.
There could be demand for another 195,000 Class II machines if Brazil’s 600 bingo halls open with an average of 325 machines. A bill allowing 35 casinos and one bingo hall for every 150,000 people passed a Senate committee last week.
The odds of the plan getting through the full legislature are higher than they’ve been in the last decade, given Brazil’s need for additional tax revenue combined with growing political support, Eilers said.
If the bill passes this spring, it would be at least 2019 before any casinos open, he estimates.
