Australian gaming operators Tabcorp and Tatts Group seem set lose their monopolies on operating poker machines in the state of Victoria.
Premier John Brumby announced that pubs, hotels and clubs would be allowed to hold their own licences rather than lease machines from Tatts or Tabcorp when the two companies’ current permits expire in four years.
"The gaming machine industry has matured in Victoria and the time is right to empower local venue operators to make local decisions about their gaming operations," said Brumby.
