The men, aged between 23 and 49, are believed to be the largest betting ring ever to operate in the Bac Tu Liem district.

They currently face charges of “gambling” and “organising gambling.”

Bac Tu Liem District police have established Nguyen Anh Tuan, 23, as the leader of the ring. He is alleged to have set up an online gambling website in July that attracted around 30 gamblers each day.

In Vietnam betting on football is illegal and people who are caught gambling for the first time are subjected to an administrative fine from VND1-2 million (£2.94-£5.89).

Repeat violations carry a jail term of up to seven years, including fines of up to VND30 million.

However, organising gambling is punishable by jail terms of up to 10 years, with fines of up to VND100 million and seizure of all property.
