Russian government under pressure to rescind the closure of the Azov City gambling zone as operators say there will not be competition with Sochi. Eugene Gerden reports.

THE two casino operators in Azov City, the first Russian gambling zone, which is located in the Krasnodar area of the country, are considering suing the government over multi-million rouble losses due to the recent decision to close the zone by the end of the current year.

The plan would see Azov City’s replacement as a gambling zone by Sochi, the venue of the Winter Olympics in 2014. According to an official representative of Azov’s current operators, Kazan company Royal Time Group, one of Russia’s leading investment companies in the fields of gambling, entertainment and construction, and Shambala, the claimed demand for compensation will be at least 14 billion roubles (US$300m).
