Ireland’s gaming legislation still hangs on an act that is 60 years old, the Gaming and Lotteries Act of 1956.

The country’s gaming market is in a constant state of flux; everyone knows this new legislation is imminent (because it has been for the best part of a century) but, understandably, not many are ready to take steps based on this information. The current legislation has the effect of putting local authorities in charge of gaming legislation for their individual regions.

The entire gaming industry in Ireland operates in a perennial grey area and there are similarities with the Italisna market in this way. This has historically made it difficult to introduce machines to the country as it is so difficult to know in which regions the games will be legal. Companies tend to have distributors show the machines at events, as they generally have a better idea of where machines will be welcome. It is a small market, but a complex one.
