Forty-nine exhibitors appeared at the Barcelona Affiliate Conference a sector of the online gaming industry which now accounts for around one-third of all the money globally staked on the web.
Affiliates are major website users to the general public who agree to permit direct access from their sites to gambling companies. Lucrative deals are struck between operators and affiliates giving website owners high percentages of the profits made from players, sometimes on a sliding scale basis over a period of time and some even for the 'lifetime' of the player. Those percentages were on display around the show floor and ranged between 25 per cent and 80 per cent.
The several hundred visitors to the show undoubtedly contained a high proportion of affiliates, but most of them were probably already in deals with operators and were there to learn how to refine their performance at the various seminars held as part of the conference and trade show. Many, however, would be there to renegotiate their deals, or perhaps to be wooed away from their current deals to fresh operators.
The highly competitive market was belied by the casual appearance of the visitors and stand-holders, perhaps encouraged by the nearness of the Costa Brava's beaches to which many retired in the afternoons! But the big names at the show, Bet365, William Hill, Paddypower, rate the event as very important to a growing and lucrative sector of their industry.
