Construction is under way after months of planning to bring a new play area for kids with special needs to the Kansas City Zoo in the US.

When complete, children of all abilities will be able to enjoy a new exploration play area located in the African exhibit of the park, thanks to a collaboration between the zoo and the Kansas City based Variety Children’s Charity.

The new equipment will include a zip line that has a companion harnesses so a parent or partner can accompany a child with special needs. There will also be an "elephant swing" that is accessible for children with special needs but accommodates multiple children to encourage engagement among all kids on the swing.

Construction of Variety KC Exploration Play is expected to start on May 4.
