Iconic video game characters Mario and Sonic have been brought together to star in what is on track to become the next blockbuster coin-op title.

HOW do you bring together two of video gaming’s most iconic characters in a fresh title that appeals to a new audience and yet stays true to their roots? Sega’s Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games arcade game is designed to do just that – and has already been grabbing the headlines since its launch at IAAPA in the US last year.
In the game, Mario, who first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981, joins Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog and a host of other characters from across the two universes to compete on the world stage at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The action takes place in the Olympic stadium, with nine different events to compete in, including the 100m, javelin and archery. The title’s release not only coincides with this summer’s games, but also a major milestone for Sonic, who this year celebrates his 25th birthday.
