Guizhou province, south-west China, now boasts an amusement park made up entirely of VR attractions.

The Oriental Science Fiction Valley Theme Park has 35 separate rides and experiences including shooting games, roller coasters and spaceship tours, which are spread out over a 1.5sq.km area.

A YouTube interview with the park CEO, Chen Jianli, revealed the driving force behind the park: “There’s fierce competition in the theme park market right now. We are trying to give customers a new experience by combining modern technologies such as VR and AR with traditional recreational facilities. The sci-fi part of it is important for the feeling it creates.”

The park, rumoured to have cost US$1.5bn, is the latest development in the push to improve the fortunes of the region, which is one of the poorer areas of China. It is being touted as a “silicon valley” with Apple already having built a data centre there.
