The US$0.5bn Super Nintendo World is now open only to Japanese guests, because of the pandemic, with only 50 per cent capacity permitted.

The park is within the Universal Studios complex in Osaka and represents the move by Nintendo from home games developer to general entertainment company. Three more Super Nintendo World parks are set to open in conjunction with Universal, in Los Angeles, Orlando and Singapore.

The first Mario game was released by Nintendo in 1985 and went on to sell more than 370 games internationally. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Mario game series, was at the opening ceremony.
