Filthy Luker (real name Luke Egan), a street artist and interventionist from Bristol, has taken retro gaming to a new level.

As part of a nationwide ‘Make Art on The Street’ initiative organised by Jamaican beer brand Red Stripe, Egan has created a giant Space Invaders game on the side of Manchester’s Town Hall, in the north-west of England. He has made use of everyday objects including road barriers, traffic cones and other street furniture to create the 17m high video game.

By pressing giant buttons, LED lights are activated – bringing the invaders and laser cannon’s firepower to life. “I’ve been obsessed with street furniture for a long time and had noticed how similar the road barriers are with the classic space invaders, plus they seem to be taking over the city,” said Egan. The artwork will be up for four weeks. Click here to watch a YouTube video documenting its creation.
