The famous pier at Southend in the UK has enjoyed a big revival in footfall this year, thanks to a council-led concentration of events.

The pier, 1.3 miles long, entertained more than 160,000 people this year, following disappointing figures last year that resulted in Southend Council’s initiative.

Between June and August were the key months, with the school holidays drawing 60,000 people on their own.

The council organised summer parties and "bank holiday bonanzas" to attract visitors. Now it plans to extend that season with Hallowe’en events and Christmas activities.
