In the first half of this year an average of two pubs each day have closed down in England and Wales, continuing a worrying decline in the pub sector that spans several years.

The prime locations for Category C gaming machines and other coin-operated entertainment, 230 fewer pubs are now in operation in the second quarter of 2023. The figure is an increase on the 153 pubs lost in the first quarter.
The overall number of operating pubs in the two countries now stands at 39,404, says commercial real estate specialist Altus Group. Wales has lost the most, 52, while London and the north-west lost 46 each.
