Despite a local council decision that its Helensburgh Pier in Scotland is incapable of restoration, a very active campaign is being mounted to refurbish and reopen the structure.

The campaigners have set up The Helensburgh Pier Company and it has obtained charity status and now plans to challenge the Argyll and Bute Council’s insistence that the pier is not viable.
Three directors of the new pier company include John Beveridge, the founder of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company. He is joined by a former marine project engineer in work involving detailed discussions with the council, who still own the pier.
The council has separately set up a tender process for an £18m Helensburgh Waterfront project that would provide a leisure centre and swimming pool development which would have the option of incorporating the pier.
