Oman’s diversification campaign could provide over 250,000 jobs in total, up 50,000 than at present working in the travel and tourism sector.

The report looks at the statistics behind global economic and employment from travel and tourism and compared 185 countries and 25 regions. It concludes that tourism and travel accounts for 10.4 per cent of global GDP and contributes 319m jobs.

In the case of Oman, the report said that US$3.15bn was contributed to the country’s economy from tourism with India providing 19 per cent of the tourists, many coming to add to the work force. The UAE had 11 per cent of Indian arrivals.

Oman should have just short of 3m tourists this year and 68 per cent of their ‘spend’ would be on leisure pursuits.
