US-headquartered Nomadic, the location-based virtual reality creator and operator, has replaced CEO Doug Griffin with Cliff Plummer, former CEO at competitor The Void, Variety has reported.

Nomadic Doug Griffin

At the helm when Nomadic was founded in 2015, Griffin makes way for the former head of the Hollywood-backed Void, who previously worked at Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic as CTO. The latter company is enjoying much growth, with 16 locations globally and more coming online in 2020.

Nomadic has recently expanded out of the US, where it has a location in Orlando and one due to open in Las Vegas next year. Its new Seoul South Korea venue opened recently in a joint venture with theatre chain CGV and sensory and motion seat provider CJ 4DX.

"After four-plus years, I'll be stepping away from Nomadic," said Griffin in a social media statement. "The journey has been incredibly enriching. Taking something from a scribble on a napkin to a wonderful experience enjoyed guests on two continents, has been truly amazing. I've had an opportunity to work with, and learn from, such a wide range of talent. They brought this idea to life and I'm forever in their debt. Thank you to all our investors and partners, without whom Nomadic would not have come to market.

"I truly believe in location-based entertainment and the vision of bringing communities together to enjoy a spectacular experience together. We're just at the beginning of this journey and the best is yet to come."

Nomadic’s experiences offer physical interaction in its VR worlds, requiring players to turn door handles, walk planks and grip railings. It also boasts an LBVR version of popular zombie-shooter Arizona Sunshine: Contagion Z. It has, however, recently gone through rounds of redundancies, according to reports.
