Southend’s Adventure Island is in the news this week after cancelling a drag act during the UK town’s Pride celebrations, because it did not fit with the owner’s family venue philosophy.

Ru Paul - real name Colin Munro - had performed as Crystal in the act, leading to protests on social media.

Philip Miller, CEO at Adventure Island, told local newspaper the Echo that the company would not be taking part in any more Pride celebrations and apologised for any offence.

“There was confusion between us and the act over what would be allowed.” He added: “We are a family park and this is just not family entertainment. We tried to be inclusive with Pride, but it has backfired on us.”

Adventure Island is a free-to-enter theme park.
