Opinions are sharply divided in the South Wales city of Newport on proposals for an amusement arcade in the Chartist Tower in Upper Dock Street.

The proposal is for a non-gambling FEC operated on free play with an admission fee, but the plan is being met by an online campaign supporting a move to put a business into a vacant property or, alternatively, calling for more diversity in the city’s shopping facilities.
The South Wales Argus reports that the opinions are not negatively biased against FECs, but more towards a greater choice - and more traditional shops. But many are also supporting anything that uses up vacant spaces.
Now up for planning consent, the scheme would be put into operation this autumn/winter with opening in around March of next year.
