The group, the main business of which is the construction and operation of shopping malls, has a strong leisure and entertainment division that includes Magic Planet and the Vox cinema chain.

In a statement last week, its chief sustainability officer Ibrahim Al-Zu’bi (pictured) said the group strategy would be to achieve circular economy.

“By 2030, all of our operating companies will have circularity at the core of their operations,” he said.

This would include using circular economy principles as the core of its procurement process, opening up fresh circular ventures by next year and phasing out single-use plastics by 2025.

He said that the group needed to change its eco-system by working with suppliers, the authorities and customers maximising the value of waste and the correct use of resources.

Al-Zu’bi said that the group already has a "reverse vending machine" for single-use plastic bottles at one mall and that has diverted 800 bottles per week or diverted 500 kilos of plastic from landfill. They have already begun to use 50 per cent of GGBFS, a cement-like material made from ash in construction that contributes to circularity has it has low-embedded carbon.
