A study has found that London is losing pubs faster than anywhere else in England.

The primary Category C machine sector lost 46 pubs in the first six months of this year in London. The figures, compiled by the Altus Group, showed also that 383 pubs closed in the UK in the period, worryingly almost up to the full-year total of 386 in 2022.

During the first quarter, an average of 51 pubs closed every month, rising to 77 in the second quarter with Wales losing the highest number, 52. Help is coming from the government’s contribution of 50 per cent of business rates and freezing alcohol duty.

The London statistic, says BBC News in an analysis, indicated that while there was a downward movement in the number of pubs over the past 20 years, employment in them has risen since the average pub has become larger.
