Attractions, family entertainment centres and amusement parks were all closed across Italy for three days over Easter in a bid to prevent a Covid-19 surge.
The nationwide entry into "red zone" came as new infections rose to 20,000 a day. After the holiday weekend, different regions are entering an "orange zone" or remaining red, and will stay that way until the end of April.
France also entered a national lockdown last week, set to last for another two weeks and was then adjusted to four weeks.
Meanwhile, German locations were locked down initially, but the authorities had a change of heart and dropped the plan.
