The Blackpool Illuminations, a one-million lightbulb attraction along the promenade of the English seaside resort, was switched on this week.

The 143-year tradition is designed to keep the arcades, pubs, restaurants, piers and hotels in the resort busy through an extra month of the season.
This year there were fears that it would not go ahead because of the energy costs involved, but the local council has switched to eco-friendly lightbulbs and renewable energy.
Blackpool has been gradually switching over to LED bulbs and reckons to have cut its electricity bill by 75 per cent in the past 20 years.
