There are hopes that the 25 per cent import duty on US-built amusement machines might be avoided – at least for UK buyers.

Yesterday it emerged that the British government had introduced its own approach to the retaliatory tariffs against the US in the Boeing vs Airbus dispute, independently of the EU.

The amusement games industry had been one of a list of those impacted by the tit-for-tat tariffs spat.

However, it has been announced that from January 1 the UK will suspend the retaliatory tariffs on US products, displaying a determination to de-escalate the situation, but reserving the right to reapply the tariffs if adequate progress is not made in negotiations.

A teleconference is being held by the British government's Department for International Trade today that may help to clarify whether the conciliatory action will apply to amusement games.
