Walk with Savanna is a charity set up by Steven Wooley of Helix Leisure to help with life-changing medical procedures for his daughter Savanna, who has cerebral palsy.

Savanna

Savanna and her twin sister Sierra were born 12 weeks prematurely in Bath, UK, two years ago. “I knew when Savanna was six months old she wasn't quite developing as fast as her twin sister but no one would give us a reason or explanation,” said Steven.

“She started physical and occupational therapy and speech at this time. Like all other parents these days, I hit the internet for answers. I knew in my heart it was cerebral palsy. When she was 18 months old we finally received the official diagnosis and we began researching ways to provide Savanna every possible opportunity there was to help her get strong and be all she can be.

“We were told by doctors that while she would struggle, she would walk one day but not for a few more years at best. We were also told that she would tire easily and when visiting places like malls and theme parks she would need a wheelchair. Competitive sports would more than likely be out of the question."

The Wooleys submitted an application for consideration for Savanna to undergo a procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) at St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri. “Six days later, we received a call telling us that she is an excellent candidate for the procedure.

“During this call we were told that with this procedure she will walk, she will not need a wheelchair for long hauls and she will be able to play competitive sports if she so chooses. This procedure will also improve her quality of life by allowing her to eat a more varied diet and sleep.”
