In a world of gaming simulations, sport probably has the richest heritage. Be it video, VR or redemption, competitive pastimes have got some longevity. Dan Snook takes a look.

Sports simulators

ARCADE sports games have come a long way since Konami’s Track and Field in 1983, which, if my memory serves, was the first game of its genre to accurately replicate sporting ambition and really get on the podium of success. But then it depends who you ask. Some will laud the VR titles that have appeared over the last few years, while others will assert that simple, basic competitive play is the key. ICE’s Chexx Bubble Hockey has been around for a similar period of time and is still sold today under the evolved Super Chexx Pro guise, but the basics of the gameplay still remain the same. There are a host of others that have made their mark over the years but we’ve only got three pages, so we’ll take a look at what’s come before, what we’ve got now and what we can expect from Sega, BANDAI NAMCO, Smaaash Entertainment and Sports Simulator.
