From January 1, 2013, the Spanish province of Catalonia, of which the principal city is Barcelona, will introduce a “light” category of AWP machine - or Type B, as it is known in Spain.

The province is one of 17 in Spain, each of which has the right to introduce its own amendments to national legislation on gaming.

The province is taking an initiative to help breathe new life into the flagging gaming machine industry at a time when most businesses in Spain are suffering the economic recession.

The new B Light category will see a taxation rate of €375 per quarter and the machines will have a 10c play price. The move is seen as potential relief for small Catalonian bars, many of which depend upon machine revenue for survival.
